Learning Your Job, Feedback and Reviews
Learning Your Job
In your team, a training plan will have been organised for you so that you can
learn your job effectively. This will include on the job training, off the job training,
specific systems training, and meeting people in other teams that you will need
to collaborate with. It may also include case studies, role plays, shadowing other
members of your team and going on business trips with others. Each team will
have its own plan for your training and there will be someone responsible within
the team for ensuring that you progress through that plan. This may be your line
manager or it may be someone with specific responsibility for training within the
team. If you’re unsure about anything relating to your training plan don’t hesitate
to ask your line manager.
Your probationary period
All employees start their employment with us in a probationary period. The length
of this will be set out in your contract of employment. Your probationary period is
a two-way process which enables us both to assess each other to ensure that
we’re the right match for a successful working career together.
During your probationary period we’ll be watching your progress and will give
you feedback and guidance on a regular basis to help you to understand your
job well. Of course we’ll also want you to give us feedback on how you’re
getting on and any concerns you may be having.
To help us both at the outset of our working relationship together, after 2 – 4
weeks, we’ll agree a number of “Induction Objectives” with you. These will be put
in writing so that you’re clear on what’s expected of you. If you have any
concerns about these, please do discuss this with your line manager. You’ll
review these objectives during the course of your probationary period and, at
the end of this, if not before, your line manager will arrange to have an “End of
Probationary Review” with you. At this Review you and your line manager will talk
through your progress and he/she will let you know if you have passed your
probationary period or if this is to be extended. In the unlikely event that the
Induction Objectives have not been met, your line manager may choose to
dismiss you at the end (or before the end) of your probation period, or the
extended probation period, giving you reasons as to why that decision has been
made. Of course, in the vast majority of cases, that does not happen!
